Cette augmentation est due en grande partie \u00e0 la taille r\u00e9duite des nouveaux satellites. Bien que la plus grande structure en orbite, la Station Spatiale Internationale, soit plus grande qu&rsquo;un terrain de football, la plupart des satellites en orbite aujourd&rsquo;hui ont une taille beaucoup plus proche de celle d&rsquo;un ballon de football. Cela s&rsquo;explique en partie par la popularit\u00e9 de la forme CubeSat, un satellite de forme dite 1U, tenant dans une enveloppe de 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm. Cette petite taille permet de lancer plusieurs satellites \u00e0 partir d&rsquo;une seule fus\u00e9e.
