La pile \u00e0 combustible n&rsquo;est pas un dispositif de chargement &#8211; elle d\u00e9pend uniquement du combustible. Dans le cas de la pile H, le combustible est le sodium m\u00e9tal liquide, largement disponible et peu co\u00fbteux. De l&rsquo;autre c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la pile, l&rsquo;air normal est une source d&rsquo;atomes d&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne. Dans l&rsquo;une d&rsquo;elles, appel\u00e9e cellule H, deux tubes de verre verticaux sont reli\u00e9s par un tube central qui contient un \u00e9lectrolyte c\u00e9ramique solide et une \u00e9lectrode d&rsquo;air poreuse. Le sodium m\u00e9tal liquide remplit le tube d&rsquo;un c\u00f4t\u00e9 et l&rsquo;air circule de l&rsquo;autre, fournissant l&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne n\u00e9cessaire \u00e0 la r\u00e9action \u00e9lectrochimique au centre, qui finit par consommer progressivement le combustible sodium. L&rsquo;autre prototype utilise une conception horizontale, avec un plateau de mat\u00e9riau \u00e9lectrolytique contenant le combustible de sodium liquide.
