Un circuit int\u00e9gr\u00e9 photonique (PIC) a d\u00e9j\u00e0 \u00e9t\u00e9 construit par la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 essaim\u00e9e Polariton Technologies, qui cherche \u00e0 commercialiser la technologie.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe a d\u00e9montr\u00e9 une r\u00e9ponse en fr\u00e9quence au-del\u00e0 de 1 THz et a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 un mod\u00e8le de circuit \u00e9quivalent du modulateur. Nos r\u00e9sultats montrent que les modulateurs plasmoniques sont particuli\u00e8rement adapt\u00e9s aux PICs THz.<\/p>\n<p>\u00ab\u00a0Notre modulateur permet de convertir directement et donc efficacement les signaux radio et autres signaux \u00e9lectriques en signaux optiques\u00a0\u00bb, explique Yannik Horst, qui a travaill\u00e9 sur ce composant dans le cadre de sa th\u00e8se de doctorat. \u00ab\u00a0Nous couvrons toute la gamme de fr\u00e9quences avec un seul composant. Il est donc extr\u00eamement polyvalent en termes d&rsquo;applications\u00a0\u00bb, ajoute M. Horst.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenewseurope.com\/en\/mems-array-forms-terahertz-modulator\/\">Un r\u00e9seau de MEMS forme un modulateur THz<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eenewseurope.com\/en\/terahertz-multiplexers-for-next-generation-6g-and-beyond\/\">Multiplexeurs THz pour la 6G<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Le modulateur se compose de deux d\u00e9phaseurs plasmoniques parall\u00e8les reli\u00e9s par des plots de contact GSG, appliquant directement le champ THz \u00e0 travers des fentes de 10-15 \u00b5m de long et de 100 nm de large.<\/p>\n<p>La lumi\u00e8re se propage \u00e0 travers un guide d&rsquo;ondes en silicium jusqu&rsquo;au modulateur plasmonique et interagit avec le mat\u00e9riau \u00e9lectro-optique organique non lin\u00e9aire (OEO, vert clair) qui remplit la fente. Un signal de fr\u00e9quence THz est g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 par une source externe \u00e0 partir du signal \u00e9lectrique et envoy\u00e9 au modulateur plasmonique o\u00f9 le champ THz est \u00e9galement fortement confin\u00e9 et encod\u00e9 sur la porteuse optique.<\/p>\n<p>Le signal optique modul\u00e9 qui en r\u00e9sulte est coupl\u00e9 \u00e0 un guide d&rsquo;ondes en Si, puis sort du PIC par un autre r\u00e9seau. Huit sources diff\u00e9rentes bas\u00e9es sur des m\u00e9langeurs \u00e9lectriques ont \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9es pour g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des signaux THz sinuso\u00efdaux dans une gamme de fr\u00e9quences allant de 10 MHz \u00e0 1,14 THz.<\/p>\n<p>Le composant obtenu a une largeur de bande \u00e9lectro-optique de 3 dB de 997 GHz, soit plus du double de celle des autres dispositifs.<\/p>\n<p>Les modulateurs de ce type pourraient \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s partout o\u00f9 de grands volumes de donn\u00e9es sont transmis, comme un pont entre le monde \u00e9lectrique et la transmission de donn\u00e9es par la lumi\u00e8re. \u00ab\u00a0Les donn\u00e9es sont toujours pr\u00e9sentes au d\u00e9part sous forme \u00e9lectrique et, de nos jours, leur transmission passe toujours par des fibres optiques \u00e0 un moment ou \u00e0 un autre\u00a0\u00bb, a d\u00e9clar\u00e9 J\u00fcrg Leuthold, professeur de photonique et de communications \u00e0 l&rsquo;ETH de Zurich.<\/p>\n<p>Parmi les autres applications potentielles, citons la transmission de donn\u00e9es par fibre optique dans et entre les centres de calcul \u00e0 haute performance, ainsi que la technologie de mesure \u00e0 haute performance, notamment les techniques d&rsquo;imagerie en m\u00e9decine, les m\u00e9thodes spectroscopiques pour l&rsquo;analyse des mat\u00e9riaux, les scanners de bagages dans les a\u00e9roports ou la technologie radar.
