Il est important de noter que ce nouveau dispositif peut \u00eatre fabriqu\u00e9 \u00e0 l&rsquo;aide des techniques de production actuelles, ce qui le rend tr\u00e8s pratique pour l&rsquo;adoption.<\/p>\n<p><em>Il nous a fallu huit ans pour passer de l&rsquo;id\u00e9e \u00e0 la validation du concept\u00a0\u00bb, explique Hele Savin, professeur \u00e0 l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 d&rsquo;Aalto. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;id\u00e9e de base est de fabriquer les photodiodes en utilisant du germanium au lieu de l&rsquo;ars\u00e9niure d&rsquo;indium et de gallium. Les photodiodes au germanium sont moins ch\u00e8res et d\u00e9j\u00e0 enti\u00e8rement compatibles avec le processus de fabrication des semiconducteurs. Cependant, il faut noter que jusqu&rsquo;\u00e0 pr\u00e9sent, les photodiodes au germanium n&rsquo;ont pas donn\u00e9 de bons r\u00e9sultats en termes de capture de la lumi\u00e8re infrarouge.<\/p>\n<p>L&rsquo;\u00e9quipe de Savin a r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 fabriquer des photodiodes en germanium qui captent la quasi-totalit\u00e9 de la lumi\u00e8re infrarouge re\u00e7ue.<\/p>\n<p><em>Les performances \u00e9lev\u00e9es ont \u00e9t\u00e9 rendues possibles par la combinaison de plusieurs approches novatrices : l&rsquo;\u00e9limination des pertes optiques \u00e0 l&rsquo;aide de nanostructures de surface et la minimisation des pertes \u00e9lectriques de deux mani\u00e8res diff\u00e9rentes\u00a0\u00bb, explique Hanchen Liu, le chercheur doctorant qui a construit le dispositif de validation du concept.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Les tests de l&rsquo;\u00e9quipe ont montr\u00e9 que leur photodiode de validation du concept surpassait en r\u00e9activit\u00e9 non seulement les photodiodes au germanium existantes, mais aussi les photodiodes actuelles \u00e0 l&rsquo;ars\u00e9niure d&rsquo;indium et de gallium. La nouvelle technologie capture tr\u00e8s efficacement les photons infrarouges et fonctionne bien sur une large gamme de longueurs d&rsquo;onde.
