Si l&rsquo;on dispose d&rsquo;un surplus d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie solaire pendant les mois d&rsquo;\u00e9t\u00e9, on peut l&rsquo;utiliser pour diviser l&rsquo;eau et produire de l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne. Cet hydrog\u00e8ne est ensuite introduit dans un r\u00e9acteur en acier inoxydable rempli de minerai de fer naturel \u00e0 400 degr\u00e9s Celsius. L&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne y extrait l&rsquo;oxyg\u00e8ne du minerai de fer &#8211; qui, en termes chimiques, est simplement de l&rsquo;oxyde de fer &#8211; et produit du fer \u00e9l\u00e9mentaire et de l&rsquo;eau. <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>\u00ab\u00a0Ce processus chimique est similaire au chargement d&rsquo;une batterie. Cela signifie que l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie contenue dans l&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne peut \u00eatre stock\u00e9e sous forme de fer et d&rsquo;eau pendant de longues p\u00e9riodes sans presque aucune perte\u00a0\u00bb, explique M. Stark. Lorsque l&rsquo;\u00e9nergie est \u00e0 nouveau n\u00e9cessaire en hiver, les chercheurs inversent le processus : ils introduisent de la vapeur chaude dans le r\u00e9acteur pour retransformer le fer et l&rsquo;eau en oxyde de fer et en hydrog\u00e8ne. L&rsquo;hydrog\u00e8ne peut alors \u00eatre converti en \u00e9lectricit\u00e9 ou en chaleur dans une turbine \u00e0 gaz ou une pile \u00e0 combustible.
