La nouvelle horloge a \u00e9t\u00e9 construite par des chercheurs du JILA, une institution conjointe de l&rsquo;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nist.gov\/news-events\/news\/2024\/07\/worlds-most-accurate-and-precise-atomic-clock-pushes-new-frontiers-physics\">Institut national des normes et de la technologie (NIST)<\/a> et de l&rsquo;universit\u00e9 du Colorado \u00e0 Boulder.<\/p>\n<p>Permettant une navigation pr\u00e9cise dans la vaste \u00e9tendue de l&rsquo;espace ainsi que la recherche de nouvelles particules, cette horloge est la derni\u00e8re \u00e0 transcender la simple mesure du temps. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 leur pr\u00e9cision accrue, ces horloges de nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration pourraient r\u00e9v\u00e9ler des gisements min\u00e9raux souterrains cach\u00e9s et tester des th\u00e9ories fondamentales telles que la relativit\u00e9 g\u00e9n\u00e9rale avec une rigueur sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent. Pour les architectes des horloges atomiques, il ne s&rsquo;agit pas seulement de construire une meilleure horloge ; il s&rsquo;agit de percer les secrets de l&rsquo;univers et d&rsquo;ouvrir la voie \u00e0 des technologies qui fa\u00e7onneront notre monde pour les g\u00e9n\u00e9rations \u00e0 venir.<\/p>\n<p>La communaut\u00e9 scientifique mondiale envisage de red\u00e9finir la seconde, l&rsquo;unit\u00e9 internationale de temps, sur la base de ces horloges atomiques optiques de nouvelle g\u00e9n\u00e9ration. Les horloges atomiques de la g\u00e9n\u00e9ration actuelle \u00e9clairent les atomes avec des micro-ondes pour mesurer la seconde. Cette nouvelle vague d&rsquo;horloges illumine les atomes avec des ondes de lumi\u00e8re visible, qui ont une fr\u00e9quence beaucoup plus \u00e9lev\u00e9e, afin de compter la seconde avec beaucoup plus de pr\u00e9cision.
