Modha, NorthPole est une perc\u00e9e dans l&rsquo;architecture des puces qui apporte des am\u00e9liorations massives en termes d&rsquo;efficacit\u00e9 \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique, d&rsquo;espace et de temps. En utilisant le mod\u00e8le ResNet-50 comme r\u00e9f\u00e9rence, NorthPole est consid\u00e9rablement plus efficace que les GPU 12 nm et les CPU 14 nm courants. (NorthPole lui-m\u00eame est construit sur une technologie de traitement de n\u0153uds de 12 nm). Dans les deux cas, NorthPole est 25 fois plus efficace sur le plan \u00e9nerg\u00e9tique, en ce qui concerne le nombre d&rsquo;images interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es par joule d&rsquo;\u00e9nergie n\u00e9cessaire. NorthPole a \u00e9galement obtenu de meilleurs r\u00e9sultats en mati\u00e8re de latence et d&rsquo;espace de calcul, en termes d&rsquo;images interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es par seconde par milliard de transistors requis. Selon M. Modha, sur ResNet-50, NorthPole surpasse toutes les grandes architectures pr\u00e9dominantes, m\u00eame celles qui utilisent des processus technologiques plus avanc\u00e9s, comme un GPU mis en \u0153uvre \u00e0 l&rsquo;aide d&rsquo;un processus de 4 nm.<\/p>\n<p>Comment parvient-elle \u00e0 calculer avec autant d&rsquo;efficacit\u00e9 que les puces existantes ? L&rsquo;une des principales diff\u00e9rences avec NorthPole est que toute la m\u00e9moire du syst\u00e8me se trouve sur la puce elle-m\u00eame, au lieu d&rsquo;\u00eatre connect\u00e9e s\u00e9par\u00e9ment. Sans ce goulot d&rsquo;\u00e9tranglement de von Neumann, la puce peut effectuer des inf\u00e9rences d&rsquo;IA beaucoup plus rapidement que d&rsquo;autres puces d\u00e9j\u00e0 sur le march\u00e9. NorthPole a \u00e9t\u00e9 fabriqu\u00e9 avec un processus de 12 nm et contient 22 milliards de transistors sur 800 millim\u00e8tres carr\u00e9s. Elle poss\u00e8de 256 c\u0153urs et peut effectuer 2 048 op\u00e9rations par c\u0153ur et par cycle avec une pr\u00e9cision de 8 bits et\u00a0 la possibilit\u00e9 de doubler et de quadrupler le nombre d&rsquo;op\u00e9rations avec une pr\u00e9cision de 4 bits et de 2 bits, respectivement.<\/p>\n<p>Mais le plus grand avantage de NorthPole est aussi une contrainte : il ne peut puiser facilement que dans la m\u00e9moire qu&rsquo;il poss\u00e8de \u00e0 bord. Toutes les acc\u00e9l\u00e9rations possibles sur la puce seraient r\u00e9duites \u00e0 n\u00e9ant si elle devait acc\u00e9der \u00e0 des informations provenant d&rsquo;un autre endroit. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une approche appel\u00e9e \u00ab\u00a0scale-out\u00a0\u00bb, NorthPole peut en fait prendre en charge des r\u00e9seaux neuronaux plus importants en les d\u00e9composant en sous-r\u00e9seaux plus petits qui s&rsquo;int\u00e8grent dans la m\u00e9moire mod\u00e8le de NorthPole, et en connectant ces sous-r\u00e9seaux ensemble sur plusieurs puces NorthPole.
