Lors de la production de courant, les &eacute;lectrons circulent de l&rsquo;anode vers la cathode en alimentant le circuit ext&eacute;rieur. Ayant perdu les &eacute;lectrons qui g&eacute;n&egrave;rent le courant, une partie des atomes de l&rsquo;anode &#8211; m&eacute;tal &eacute;lectriquement conducteur comme le lithium &#8211; deviennent des ions qui se d&eacute;placent alors vers la cathode dans l&rsquo;&eacute;lectrolyte conducteur.<\/p>\n<p>Lors de la recharge de la batterie le processus est invers&eacute;, et les ions retournent &agrave; l&rsquo;anode. Mais dans ce cas, les ions ne se fixent pas de mani&egrave;re uniforme, ils forment des bosses microscopiques qui au fur et &agrave; mesure des cycles de recharge cristallisent en de longues branches. Lorsque ces cristallisations atteignent et contactent la cathode, elles forment un court-circuit. Le courant circule alors dans les cristallisations au lieu d&rsquo;alimenter le circuit externe. La batterie est hors d&rsquo;usage. Le courant qui circule, r&eacute;chauffe les cristallisations, et l&rsquo;&eacute;lectrolyte risque de s&rsquo;enflammer. M&ecirc;me si les cristallisations ne court-circuitent pas la batterie, elles peuvent se d&eacute;tacher de l&rsquo;anode et flotter dans l&rsquo;&eacute;lectrolyte et r&eacute;duire encore la capacit&eacute; de la batterie.<\/p>\n<p>Sur une batterie lithium de test, les chercheurs ont augment&eacute; les cristallisations et les ont chauff&eacute;es pendant quelques jours. Ils ont alors constat&eacute; que des temp&eacute;ratures allant jusqu&rsquo;&agrave; 55&deg;C r&eacute;duisait les cristallisations d&rsquo;au moins 36%. Pour comprendre ce qui a caus&eacute; ce retrait, les chercheurs ont simul&eacute; sur ordinateur l&rsquo;effet de la chaleur sur les atomes de lithium qui composent une cristallisation. \n<\/p>\n<p>Les simulations ont montr&eacute; qu&rsquo;avec l&rsquo;augmentation des temp&eacute;ratures, les atomes se d&eacute;pla&ccedil;aient de deux fa&ccedil;ons. Certains atomes &agrave; la pointe de la structure peuvent tomber &agrave; des niveaux inf&eacute;rieurs. O&ugrave; encore, un atome &agrave; un niveau inf&eacute;rieur peut se d&eacute;placer et laisser une place vacante, qui est ensuite prise par un autre atome.
