Le laser de ChemCam d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 par Thales pour le CNES fut le premier laser de puissance \u00e0 fonctionner sur une plan\u00e8te autre que la Terre. Il est toujours en op\u00e9ration et totalise \u00e0 ce jour plus de 500 000 tirs \u00ab&nbsp;extraterrestres&nbsp;\u00bb.&nbsp;<br \/>\nThales r\u00e9alise l\u2019opto-m\u00e9canique (i.e. la partie optique et la m\u00e9canique associ\u00e9e) du laser, hors \u00e9lectronique fabriqu\u00e9e par l\u2019IRAP qui assure \u00e9galement la qualification et les tests du laser dans des conditions repr\u00e9sentatives (temp\u00e9rature, chocs, vibrations, radiations, dur\u00e9e de vie,\u2026.) d\u2019un instrument embarqu\u00e9 sur un Rover martien.<br \/>\nLe laser SuperCam propose, en plus de la fonction LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) d\u00e9j\u00e0 pr\u00e9sente sur ChemCam, une fonction spectroscopique, la spectroscopie Raman, technique non destructive, permettant d\u2019approfondir les analyses en \u00e9tudiant les modes de vibrations des mol\u00e9cules. Cette nouvelle technique d\u2019analyse, jamais exp\u00e9riment\u00e9e sur Mars, permettra de pister d\u2019\u00e9ventuels marqueurs de la vie.<\/p>\n<p>La fourniture du nouveau laser SuperCam constitue un v\u00e9ritable d\u00e9fi car, tout en gardant un volume identique \u00e0 celui de son pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur, il int\u00e8gre une fonctionnalit\u00e9 suppl\u00e9mentaire, ainsi qu\u2019un mode de commutation entre les fonctionnalit\u00e9s LIBS et Raman.<\/p>\n<p>Au-del\u00e0 du d\u00e9fi de l\u2019encombrement, les \u00e9quipes ont \u00e9galement r\u00e9ussi \u00e0 augmenter les capacit\u00e9s d\u2019analyse de fa\u00e7on significative : le laser SuperCam peut enchainer des salves de tirs 10 fois plus longues, 1000 tirs d\u2019affil\u00e9e contre 100 tirs maximum pour ChemCam, \u00e0 une fr\u00e9quence 3 fois sup\u00e9rieure (10 Hz).
